Kansas City Doula Services: Meet Sara McAdoo of Nurtured Life Company

Sara McAdoo, Kansas City birth doula and prenatal yoga teacher, offering compassionate pregnancy and postpartum support

Hi! I am Sara McAdoo, a birth doula and prenatal yoga teacher here in Kansas City. I also make pregnancy and postpartum herbal teas using fresh and organic herbs from trusted and reliable American growers, giving the best nutrients and deliciousness to the growing baby and mama. I also just recently added natural childbirth education and support as well as placenta encapsulation and remedies giving even more nutrients and health back to mom after birth.

Outside of all things pregnancy and baby, I am a wife of 16 years and homeschooling mother to 4 amazing children (3 boys and 1 girl). I love helping out at our local church in the children’ s department, including leading Bible Quizzing. We have backyard chickens and a large gardening area. I love baking, family movie nights, gardening, crazy diy projects, soap and salve making, and an occasional good book when I have a rare peaceful moment.

My interest in becoming a doula really began when I experienced firsthand the difference a birth team can make when they are united behind you and your plans. My first birth didn’t go exactly as planned, ultimately ending in a c-section, and I remember not being able to hold my baby for quite some time after delivery. This experience traumatized me, but it also set me on a path and changed my perspective on care for women and childbearing.

When pregnant with my second, I knew I wanted to try for a VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section) so the first thing I did was find an amazing team of doulas for this birth. And I am so glad I did. I started to get pressured into scheduling a repeat c-section late in my pregnancy, and through the help of my doula, I actually switched providers at 39 weeks! Who does that? I did! I felt confident in my decision for a VBAC and knew that where I was, I wasn’t getting the desired team support anymore. So I switched without hesitation.

My VBAC was supported and encouraged and I had a successful natural VBAC in the hospital at 41 weeks with the support of my husband, midwife, and doula by my side. Feeling so empowered is what made me start thinking how I myself could encourage moms to be informed on the options they have available. I felt so empowered knowing it was my birth and not someone else running the scene. My last 2? Born at home! Yup, I am now that crazy person that loves homebirth! I was surrounded by peace and love and support from my whole team.

We have a habit of saying that if mom and baby are healthy that should be enough, but care for women is so much more. We must also hold space for mama and baby and decrease childbirth trauma. Thus the role of the doula. It is such a personal journey and one that lives with us.

I did birth doula training through Home Holistic (the same place I did prenatal yoga when I was pregnant and where my doula team worked) in Summer of 2024. I then did DONA training in 2025 and plan to become DONA certified later this year. I also received my prenatal yoga teacher certification through Home Holistic this April 2026.

Favorite moments in a birth: When a mom looks up at me with baby in her arms and says “I did it!,” I know I have done my job well as a doula. I love seeing an active husband tending and caring for his wife in such a vulnerable time. It is also a joy to see that same husband become a dad and experience his first skin to skin with baby during that beautiful after birth bonding time. Moms are so extremely strong and their body is amazing! It is always a beauty to see a mother both surrender and gain strength during her labor and work with her baby in such a beautiful way.

My most recent birth had an amazing husband and midwife. Mama had her faith-filled Christian music peacefully playing in the background and trusted her body and her team. Her body naturally and instinctively started to push her baby out without any coaching. She trusted her body and the process of birth and knew her birthing team was fully supportive and there for her. What a beautiful moment to experience a mom just naturally give birth how her body wanted to without anyone else telling her to do something she didn’t want!

Favorite parts of being a doula: When a mama realizes she has options! Even in a scheduled c-section, there are options! It’s still a birth. That mom will start to ask amazing questions to get her team all on board with her wishes. She knows her risks, the benefits, what she is feeling, and she knows her why! What a powerful and amazing tool to have before even having their baby!

Facts: Doulas don’t just attend unmedicated births or home births. Doulas also attend births in hospitals where interventions are planned and done with support, including epidurals and even cesarean births.

Having a doula drastically increases a positive outcome on your birth, but does not guarantee everything to go to plan. Birth is unpredictable and should be treated individually.

Doulas don’t take the place of your partner. Doulas support the whole family, including your partner and making them feel confident and part of the birth experience as well.

Don’t wait to hire a doula. Doulas can support you from the very beginning (even in IFV journeys or in infant loss).

Doulas do not take the place of midwives or OBs. We assist in emotional, physical, and educational support. We are not a medical professional.

Having a fully supportive team around you will have a way higher likelihood of a positive outcome emotionally.

You should always have options in your birth. It is your and your baby’s birth. And everything should be done with consent and care.

The placenta is an amazing organ!

It’s never too late to hire a doula and feel fully supported!
